Conservation Meets Opportunity: Edge Group Scotland Announces New Partnership with RZSS Edinburgh Zoo

A Wild New Partnership

Edge Group Scotland is delighted to announce an exciting new partnership with the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS), creating opportunities for young adults to develop valuable skills, gain practical experience in a real working environment and make meaningful connections with the world of wildlife conservation.

The collaboration brings together Edge Group Scotland's expertise in specialist supported day programmes with RZSS's extensive knowledge and experience in wildlife conservation, research and public engagement.

At the heart of the partnership is a shared commitment to creating purposeful opportunities that encourage participation, develop confidence and enable young adults to put their skills into practice.

For Edge Group Scotland, this represents an exciting development in our commitment to delivering outcomes-focused programmes, connecting young adults with genuine experiences and opportunities beyond our own facilities.

An Exciting First Chapter

Our Edge Community Programme is the first group to benefit from the partnership, with a specially developed programme providing opportunities to learn from conservation professionals, develop practical skills and gain experience within the working environment of one of Scotland's leading wildlife conservation charities.

The partnership officially got underway on Monday 12th October, when Jaima Smith from RZSS Edinburgh Zoo visited our campus in Musselburgh to meet the Community group and introduce the opportunities ahead.

Jaima Smith from RZSS Edinburgh Zoo introduces Edge Community Programme participants to the charity's wildlife conservation work, marking the beginning of an exciting new partnership with Edge Group Scotland.

The introductory session gave the young adults an insight to the work of RZSS, the importance of wildlife conservation and the specialist knowledge involved in protecting threatened species.

It also marked the beginning of an opportunity that goes far beyond simply visiting Edinburgh Zoo.

Real Environments. Meaningful Experiences. Valuable Skills.

A central aim of the partnership is to provide young adults with opportunities to experience a genuine working environment, learn directly from professionals and develop the confidence and skills needed to participate meaningfully.

Through the collaboration, Community Programme participants will develop their understanding of wildlife, the natural world and the importance of conservation, while gaining valuable practical experience in a professional working environment.

Working alongside conservation professionals will provide opportunities to build confidence, develop transferable skills and take on meaningful responsibilities, supporting greater independence, future employability and active participation in the wider community.

Importantly, these experiences will also help foster a deeper connection with the natural world and an understanding of the role we can all play in protecting it.

For Edge Group Scotland, this is what outcomes-focused support looks like: creating opportunities that have real purpose, encourage progression and help young adults prepare for life beyond our programmes.

Connecting with Conservation on a Much Bigger Scale

The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland is a wildlife conservation charity whose work extends far beyond the boundaries of Edinburgh Zoo and Highland Wildlife Park.

From protecting threatened species and restoring wildlife populations in Scotland to supporting international conservation projects, scientific research and efforts to combat illegal wildlife trade, RZSS plays an important role in addressing some of the challenges facing wildlife around the world.

Through its specialist conservation science, animal care expertise and public engagement work, RZSS is helping to protect biodiversity while inspiring people and communities to develop stronger connections with nature.

This partnership creates an opportunity for the young adults at Edge Group Scotland to connect with that wider mission, gaining an understanding of the importance of conservation while developing practical skills and experiences of their own.

It is a collaboration that brings together two very different areas of expertise, with a common belief in the value of participation, opportunity and meaningful engagement.

The Value of Working Together

Samantha Roberts, CEO of Edge Group Scotland, said:

"At Edge Group Scotland, we're always looking for ways to create meaningful opportunities beyond our own programmes. Our partnership with RZSS is a fantastic example of what can happen when organisations bring their expertise together to create something genuinely special.

"For the young adults we support, this is about much more than learning about wildlife. It's an opportunity to gain valuable experience in a real working environment, develop transferable skills and build the confidence to take on responsibilities and make a meaningful contribution. We're incredibly proud to be working alongside an organisation doing such important conservation work, and excited about what our young adults will learn, achieve and contribute."

Jaima Smith, Community and Discovery Officer at RZSS Edinburgh Zoo, added:

“We’re delighted to be working with Edge Group Scotland to help young adults discover more about wildlife conservation and the important role we all play in protecting nature. Opportunities like this allow us to share our knowledge and passion for wildlife while helping participants develop new skills, build confidence and experience the world of conservation first-hand. We hope the partnership will inspire them to connect with nature in new ways and discover the many ways they can all make a difference for wildlife.”

Looking Ahead

The launch of the Community Programme strand marks an exciting first step in the wider partnership between Edge Group Scotland and RZSS.

We are particularly grateful to Jaima and the wider RZSS team for the time, expertise and commitment they have invested in developing this opportunity alongside us.

Meaningful partnerships require more than simply opening doors. They require a willingness to share knowledge, recognise potential and create opportunities for people to participate and contribute.

That is what makes this collaboration so valuable.

We look forward to building on this partnership and, most importantly, sharing the progress, experiences and achievements of the young adults at the heart of it.
